Back to work on the Morgan Giles 30

After a bit of time away from The Morgan Giles 30 it is time to get on with a number of the jobs which are still to do on her over the winter months. Firstly get the stanchions and lifelines back in position so that we can work on the deck safely without out the risk of falling off the boat.

Another job that needed doing was to refit the rudder back in place so that the tiller block and other fitting could be refitted and any adjustments made to get the tiller and steering sorted so that the rudder was fitting on its bearing correctly.

The propeller shaft and propeller are now refitted and so that the engine installation can be started.
The first job on the inside is to finish off fitting the parts that need to go in before the engine itself can be craned into position.

Starting to sort out this mess, then make sense of this.

First remove all the loose items to get to the bottom of the engine bay and make sense of what we have to sort out first.

Sort out what is any good and replace what is needed to be renewed with up to date equipment.

These fuel lines will need renewing with new copper pipes so that they are both the same size.

The photo above as one size and this fuel pipe is a different size.

Someone did a good job on the gear shift and throttle cables cutting them off with a pair of bolt croppers

Fairline weekender in for her to engines to be put back in and the rest of the engine room to sort out.

Now that the Morgan Giles 30 as left the yard the cradle is being repurposed for our latest project, the refit the original engines back into this Fairline weekender.

The boat safely on the cradle ready to be worked on over the next few weeks.

The business end of the outdrives. these need a bit of work before these are ready to have the legs fitted back on to the boat.

The dinghies in the workshop are coming along at different stages of the being done of them

The Enterprise dinghy is just waiting for its final few coats of Varnish before its turned over to have the Hull sanded down and given a fresh coat of White marine glass paint

The decks are all smooth and just need a good drying day to get the varnish applied.

The Mai Star Dinghy as now had its final coats of White Marine gloss paint and just needs turning over to have the varnishing done on the top plank and on the seats and the inside gets it fresh coats of white marine gloss and then it will be ready for getting an outing.

She looking good just got to get some varnish on the top plank and on the seats and thwarts.

The GRP dinghy is now getting ready to be flowcoated on the inside and the centre thwart and a set of new gunwales.

Painting and varnishing Monday

Start  of a new week after a short break to recharge the mind and body, so its back to the painting and varnishing of the dinghies in the workshop.

The clinker dinghy getting its last coat of primer before it gets its two coats of white marine gloss paint. Then it will get the top plank re-varnish before its turned over and get the inside sorted out and then get used.

The Enterprise dinghy getting the patches their thinned varnish coats to build up the layers back to the rest of the varnish.

Once the build up coats are done then the whole of the deck will be varnished and then the Enterprise will be turned over and the hull will be sanded back and spot primed and then a couple of coats of white marine gloss paint before it is put up for sale.

There is a few more coats of varnish to go yet before the finishing coats of varnish are applied.

Monday, 23 September 2024

Starting the touching up of the varnish and paintwork on the two small projects in the workshop.

Having finished the sanding of the decks of the Enterprise it is now time to start laying up the thinned coats of varnish on the bare wood areas of the decks.

The main areas have been the areas where the cover was in contact with the varnish and broken down the surface of the varnish.

Most of the varnish is in good condition and will just need a few coats of varnish when the areas have been touched up enough to get the layers back to the good condition varnish.

The clinker dinghy has been touched up where the paint was sanded back and was back to bare wood, most of the lands were where the paint was thin and needed touching up.

The transom needed a bit of touching up as well, so it was done at the same time as the Enterprise dinghy.

Saturday, 21 September 2024

Now that the larger projects have left the yard and workshop it is time to get on with some of the smaller projects that have been waiting to get done.

This Enterprise dinghy is in for some much needed TLC, The main areas are where the varnish needs to be sanded back to bare wood and patch varnished until it is back up to the same thickness as the area that are not affected.
Once this is done then the Enterprise dinghy will turned over and the hull sanded and primered where necessary and then given a fresh coat of white marine gloss.

Some of the areas that were affected were large and other not so large

As in this photo just a small area around the top of the stem on to the small area of the foredeck.

The Mai Star Class dinghy is now ready to be cleaned down and the bare patches need marine primer applied and then a fresh coat of white gloss and the top plank need re-varnishing before the boat is turned back over and the inside and top of the gunwales need re-varnishing and the inside needs repainting

The restoration dinghy project is coming along with a few more hull repairs to be done on the inside before the whole of the inside is sanded back to clean fibreglass and the inside is given a coat of grey flow coat.
Then the gunwale will be made and steamed into position and the rest of the restoration will be done.

Monday, 9 September 2024

After 5 years the workshop is now empty of the Morgan Giles 30 and there is room for other projects to get done.

The Morgan Giles 30 now at its new home for the outside work to be done before launching next spring and sailing home to Scotland with its owner.

Now that the Morgan Giles 30 is at its new home until it is launched the workshop is a hive of different work from sanding and painting and varnish dinghies to moulding new dinghies to rebuilding old dinghies which were going to land fill.

The blue dinghy was on its way to a landfill site when an owner who is a friend of J-Star Marine Services ask if he with the help of the team at J-Star Marine Services could help bring this boat back to life.

The latest Little Mai Star Dinghy being finished off ready to go to its new owner in the North of England.

We are always looking for new projects, to fill our workshop and give it the attention it deserves from a team which no what it takes to bring the owners dreams to life.

The Morgan Giles 30 at another boatyard near to my yard which has the equipment to install the engine and erect the mast and get it rigged  and have the Pilpit and Pushpit and stanchions refitted.

Also the patches on the bottom that were not able to be  Gelshielded  before can now be done before the bottom is antifouled..

Plenty of extra props under the boat to make it safe to work on deck, especially the foredeck which with its long overhang from the front of the keel.

Wednesday, 14 August 2024

The Morgan Giles 30 as left the boatyard to have the engine installed and the boat rigged.

Cleared the yard so that the transport could pick her up and load on their flat bed trailer

The transport arrived on time and were soon ready to load her.

Getting the legs out on the truck ready for the big lift.

Up and over the yard fence and on to the  cradle.

Loaded on the truck and just got to release the slings and strap her down to get ready to transport to her new home to get the engine installed and the yacht rigged.

Now got an empty yard, however, not for long as other work is waiting to come in and get work done.
